Uniforms and Marketing....

What should Personal Trainers wear? How should they present themselves

Nothing looks less professional than an Ali G (Borat actor) look alike personal trainer (matching bright red tracksuit, matching red shoes, unshaven…).  Often when you join a gym you can go online and spend time reading about each personal trainer and there is normally a photo. The problem is that when you go to the gym you would struggle to identify some of them.

Why…because some don’t have to wear an official uniform.

Is it that if you are a contract PT you do not have to have a uniform? Are there no guidelines in place to monitor presentation? You would think that if these personal trainers wanted to gain more clients, they would want to market themselves. In some of my experiences I cannot even tell which one is the PT and which is the client!

My mentor once told me to remember that you are always being observed. This is something personal trainers should always have in the back of their minds; that potential clients will be watching so there is no room for slacking off. It is also at this point  to remember that first impressions count and that it can take along time to undo any damage done.

When you go to a gym you want to be able to clearly identify who the trainers are. Personal training is about marketing ourselves, when you are training someone in the gym you are a literally a free walking billboard for your business!! Why are so many personal trainers not recognizing this free marketing tool? Are they not aware they are being watched or do they not care?

What do you think a professional looking PT should wear? Is it ok for a trainer to wear rugby shorts, cap, beanie, be unshaven…… what should our unofficial uniform be? And what would you want your PT to be wearing?

Have a look this week. See what first impressions PT’s in your gym are making. Are they being their own billboard? Are they invisible? Or worse still do they look unprofessional?

One of the workplace managers I work with in the fitness industry came to me with a question regards to uniform. She wanted to know if it would be appropriate to have the PT's wearing singlet’s (this was a request from the trainers as it is too hot….). I discussed this with my team here in Wellington and we all agreed that no, this isn't really the professional or appropriate look that trainers should be displaying. So along the same lines as what you’re saying, I think it is crucial to be making an impression and ensuring you are 100% clean shaven, clean uniform and tidy hair! No hairy armpits for me thanks, lets face it a trainer wearing a nice tight singlet will be more concerned about one thing and that is how good their guns look in the mirror, not sure I would be keen to part with $80 for that….

Thanks Sarah that was a great comment.I Totally agree, singlets would be so weird. it would be interesting to see if there is anything put in their contracts that atleast covers the basics, like clean shaven, tidy dressed etc. what gyms also seem to forget is that those contract PTS are a part of their club and will affect their retention too.

This is from a standard PT contract that I've used with a number of trainers. It's always worked fine. I recommend going clause by clause through all expectations (obligations in contracts) and provisions with trainers as a common understanding is the first step in a smooth journey.

4. The Licensee shall act in a professional manner at all times while working with clients in XYZ facilities. This includes the following:

4.1 Personal grooming - the Licensee must be clean and tidy when providing Personal Training. ie. long hair tied back, personal jewellery kept to a minimum (for safety reasons), clean clothing and footwear, males must be clean shaven unless growing a beard.

4.2 Conduct - the Licensee shall portray a friendly, positive, professional and respectful manner at all times whilst within the XYZ Licensed Facilities.

As a closing, the scruffiest trainers I found were the least popular as it seemed to reflect their unwillingness to pay attention to detail and follow through consistently - there are a lot of 'implicit' messages in our appearance - just ask your nearest "image consultant".
