NZIHF Role: Tutor
Talk to me if: You want to chat with someone who knows the ins and outs of the fitness industry. Or if you would like some help designing and presenting programs for injury rehabilitation.
About me: I was born in "Da Naki" (Taranaki) and have lived almost everywhere in NZ since. Growing up I was a typical sporty Kiwi kid, perhaps a little too focused on extra-curricula sporting activities rather than my academic requirements. Most of my personal development and many of my most cherished memories come from high school sports. After school I had four of the best years of my life studying sport science and exercise prescription at the University of Otago. Since graduating in 2002, I have been working as a Personal Trainer at Hamilton Les Mills, a role I absolutely love.
Industry experience: Since 2002 I have been based at Hamilton Les Mills, I started out as a fitness consultant, where I wrote and presented basic exercise programmes. Within a year I took the big leap into the world of self-employed personal training. Over the years I have worked with a massive range of people, from jockeys to body-builders. Recently I have become a bit of a 'go to' girl when it comes to shoulder and knee rehabilitation, which is something I find hugely challenging and rewarding.
Education highlights: After high school I completed the four year PE degree at Otago University. This was a fantastic course that went really in-depth into anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, the basic knowledge I now refer to with my rehab clients. I finished my studies with a double major in Sport and Exercise Prescription, and Sport and Leisure studies. When I left university I had a strong base of theoretical knowledge, but almost no practical experience, so most of my personal training education happened on the job.
Recommendations: Never stop learning! The fitness industry is constantly evolving; make sure you are evolving with it.
